Job Summary:

We are seeking an experienced, compassionate and reliable live-in caregiver to provide comprehensive personal care and support to an elderly client. The client has a complex medical history that requires assistance with basic activities of daily living (BADLs) and instrumental activities of daily living (IADLs), including incontinence management, medication management, feeding, personal care, housekeeping, emotional support, and pet care. The successful candidate will work closely with the client's family and the other care team members to ensure that she receives the highest quality of care.

Responsibilities:

  • Provide physical assistance with sit-to-stand transfers and mobility. The client spends most of her day in a hospital bed and needs to be in a wheelchair for therapy and time outside. The caregiver will need to be able to use a sit-to-stand transfer and a wheelchair for mobility.
  • Assist with incontinence management and toileting. The client has recently been diagnosed with overflow incontinence and requires supervision to maintain bladder and bowel control. The caregiver will need to provide support and encouragement to help the client maintain control.
  • Administer and manage medication according to the prescribed schedule and ensure proper administration. The client is currently taking medication for hypertension, hyperlipidemia, anxiety, and chronic diarrhea. The caregiver will need to set up and administer medication on a daily basis.
  • Assist with feeding and meal preparation. The client requires assistance with preparing food and cutting meat and is on a pureed diet and requires thickened liquids to prevent aspiration. The caregiver will need to be familiar with preparing pureed food and thickened liquids to prevent aspiration.
  • Provide full assistance with bathing and partial assistance with dressing and toileting. The client requires full assistance with bathing and partial assistance with dressing and toileting. The caregiver will need to provide assistance with these tasks as required.
  • Assist with shopping and cooking and other housekeeping tasks. The client is unable to do any housework and requires assistance with shopping and cooking. The caregiver will be responsible for housekeeping tasks, including laundry and cleaning.
  • Provide emotional support and comfort. The client may need emotional support and comfort to help manage her anxiety and depression through techniques such as deep breathing and relaxation exercises.
  • The client has a pet. The caregiver will be responsible for feeding, toileting, and providing general care for the pet.
  • Respect the client's sensitivity to phone use during on duty caregiving hours.

Qualifications:

  • Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) certification is preferred for this position, other nursing degrees and certifications may also be considered as long as the candidate has relevant experience and skills in providing personal care and support to elderly or disabled individuals.
  • Nursing degree and/or Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) certification or equivalent certification such as a Home Health Aide (HHA) or Personal Care Assistant (PCA) certification.
  • At least one year of experience providing personal care to elderly or disabled individuals.
  • Demonstrated experience with incontinence management, medication management, and feeding.
  • Familiarity with pureed food and thickened liquids preparation to prevent aspiration.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to interact with the client's family and other care team members.
  • Ability to provide physical assistance with transfers and mobility, including using a sit-to-stand transfer and a wheelchair for mobility.
  • Strong problem-solving and critical thinking skills to anticipate and manage potential care issues.
  • Ability to work flexible hours, including weekends and holidays, as required by the client's care schedule.
  • Compassionate and patient nature, with a genuine desire to help others.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail, to ensure that the client's care plan and schedule are followed accurately.
  • Positive attitude, with a willingness to adapt to changes in the client's care plan and schedule.
  • Clean driving record and reliable transportation.
  • Ability to speak and write English fluently.
  • Ability to pass a criminal background check and drug screening test.

Physical Requirements:

  • The caregiver must have the physical ability to provide care and assistance to the client, who has limited mobility and requires assistance with transfers and mobility. The following physical requirements are necessary for the role:
    • Ability to stand, sit, walk, and lift up to 60 pounds.
    • Ability to provide physical assistance with transfers and mobility, including using a sit-to-stand transfer and a wheelchair for mobility.
    • Ability to perform tasks involving manual dexterity, such as preparing meals and administering medication.
    • Ability to stand for long periods of time while assisting the client with transfers and mobility.
    • Ability to operate and maneuver a sit-to-stand transfer device and a wheelchair.
    • Ability to perform household tasks, such as cleaning, laundry, and grocery shopping, as required.
    • Ability to walk the client's pet, which involves very short distances.
    • Ability to climb stairs, as the client's residence may not have an elevator.
    • Ability to work for extended periods of time, including weekends and holidays, as required by the client's care schedule.
    • It is important for the caregiver to be in good physical and mental health and free from any medical conditions that may impair their ability to provide care to the client. Additionally, the caregiver must be able to work in a safe and responsible manner, following proper lifting techniques and other safety protocols to prevent injury to themselves or the client.

Working Conditions:

  • The caregiver will be providing live-in care to the client, which means that they will be residing in the client's home and will be available to provide care at all times. The following working conditions are necessary for the role:
    • The caregiver will have a private room provided in the client's home.
    • The caregiver will be provided with meals and other basic necessities.
    • The caregiver will be expected to work extended hours, including weekends and holidays, as required by the client's care schedule.
    • The caregiver will be required to maintain a professional and respectful relationship with the client and their family members at all times.
    • The caregiver will be required to accompany the client to medical appointments and other outings.
    • The caregiver will need to be flexible and able to adapt to changes in the client's care plan and schedule.
    • The caregiver may be required to work in a fast-paced and stressful environment, especially during emergency situations.
    • The caregiver will be required to maintain confidentiality and respect the client's privacy at all times.
    • The caregiver will be required to follow all safety protocols and guidelines, including proper hand hygiene and the use of personal protective equipment (PPE) when necessary.
    • It is important for the caregiver to be able to work in a safe, professional, and respectful manner, while maintaining a positive attitude and fostering a caring and supportive environment for the client. The caregiver should also be able to work collaboratively with the client's family members and other care team members to ensure that the client receives the highest quality of care possible.

Compensation:

The live-in caregiver will receive a competitive salary of up to over $90,000 per year, based on providing live in care and full time support to the client. This salary does not include compensation for living expenses, such as room and board.  In addition to salary, the caregiver will receive the following benefits:

  • Private room in the client's home.
  • Meals and other basic necessities provided.
